What Is Sinterklaas?
Sinterklaas is one of the most beloved Dutch traditions, celebrated every year on 5 December (Sinterklaasavond). The holiday features Sinterklaas — a white-bearded bishop figure — who arrives by steamboat from Spain each November to deliver gifts to children across the Netherlands. His arrival is a national event, broadcast live on television, and celebrated with songs, surprises, and sweet treats.
Central to the tradition are speculaas cookies — spiced shortcrust biscuits shaped like Sinterklaas himself, his mitre (bishop's hat), or typical Dutch motifs — as well as pepernoten (small spiced biscuits), marzipan, and chocolate letters. Decorating these cookies is a cherished part of the holiday for both children and adults.
For newcomers to Amsterdam, the Sinterklaas workshop is a wonderful way to experience a genuine Dutch tradition hands-on, while creating something beautiful to take home.
Workshop Themes & Cookie Designs
In the Sinterklaas workshop, you will decorate cookies in an authentic Dutch holiday style. Cookie designs include:
- Sinterklaas portrait cookies
- Bishop's mitre (mijter) cookies
- Pepernoten pattern cookies
- Traditional red, white, and gold colour palettes
- Windmill and Amsterdam motifs for a Dutch twist
All cookies are pre-baked and ready to decorate. We use safe, food-grade royal icing and a full range of food colouring and edible decorations.
